ChatGPT Voice arrives in Finances for US users

OpenAI says you can now talk through your money with ChatGPT Voice inside Finances, which reads linked accounts but cannot change them.

OpenAI has added ChatGPT Voice to Finances, the personal-finance area of ChatGPT. Instead of typing questions about your money, you can now talk them through.

OpenAI announced it with a short video on its official YouTube channel, which was a day old when we checked on November 5:

What OpenAI says it does

OpenAI’s description under the video is short: “Securely connect your accounts through Finances, then talk through your finances on topics like what subscriptions you’re paying for, discuss which you’d like to keep and what you could save by cancelling.”

So the new piece is the conversation. Finances already let you connect accounts and ask written questions. Voice adds spoken back-and-forth about the same data. OpenAI’s example is a subscription review, but nothing in the announcement limits it to that.

How Finances works

OpenAI’s Finances page describes the underlying product:

  • Account connections. ChatGPT connects to your financial accounts through Plaid, which OpenAI says supports over 12,000 financial institutions. Once connected, ChatGPT can access balance, transaction and investment data.
  • Read-only. OpenAI says ChatGPT “cannot see full account numbers or make any changes to your accounts.” You can disconnect accounts at any time from Settings or the Finances home page.
  • Dashboard. Finances includes a view of your spending, with the option to ask what has changed or what stands out.
  • Planning and credit. OpenAI also lists planning help for goals and an option to connect a credit score for insights on goals such as paying down debt.
  • Not professional advice. OpenAI states plainly that ChatGPT “is not a replacement for professional financial advice.”

Who can use it

OpenAI’s Finances page says the product “is available to users in the U.S. on Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans.” The announcement video does not say whether voice has the same reach, and does not say which apps support it, so check inside your own account.

The access has widened over time:

  • May 15, 2026: OpenAI launched personal finance tools in preview for ChatGPT Pro subscribers in the US, according to TechCrunch.
  • June 30, 2026: 9to5Mac reported that the feature expanded to ChatGPT Plus customers in the US.
  • Now: OpenAI’s own page lists Free and Go as well. We could not find an announcement saying when those plans were added.

For ChatGPT Voice generally, OpenAI’s documentation lists availability in the ChatGPT desktop app for Plus, Pro, Business, Edu and Enterprise plans, depending on rollout. That page does not mention Finances, so treat it as background, not a statement about this feature.

Why it matters

Talking is a lower barrier than typing for many people, and money questions are often the kind you would rather ask out loud, such as “where is my money going?” For freelancers, small-business owners and anyone who handles their own household finances, it makes a quick review easier.

It also raises the same questions as any finance tool:

  • Privacy. A spoken conversation about your accounts is sensitive data. Read OpenAI’s data controls before connecting accounts, and disconnect any you do not want shared.
  • Accuracy. A voice assistant can sound confident about numbers it has misread. Check any figure before you cancel something or move money.
  • Scope. This is personal finance. It is not accounting software, tax advice or a tool for business books.

How it differs from handing an agent your password

The design is also a useful contrast with a problem we covered recently: banks blocking AI agents that log in with customers’ own passwords. Finances connects through Plaid with read-only access to limited data, while the agents banks are objecting to sign in as the customer and can act. For anyone asking an AI about their money, the read-only route is the safer pattern.

If you use ChatGPT for work tasks, our page on ChatGPT Work covers the separate agent product, which is a different feature from Finances.
